carers trip 1

To celebrate Carers Week 2017 five young carers went to Burrator Discovery Centre to take part in a range of activities with others from across the city.

Stoke Damerel was one of five secondary schools to attend the event organised by Plymouth City Council.

"The students started the day by making a campfire where they toasted marshmallows and made bread dough, wrapping it around sticks and putting it into the fire to bake," said Ms Blackmore who is the College's Young Carers' Champion.

"Following this students carried out a nature trail around a section of the reservoir and were able to learn some facts about the area and the nature surrounding them.

"The final activity the students took part in was a woodwork session, where they got the opportunity to make a mallet, a pen pot and other exciting creations, using skills they had been taught.

"The students were a credit to the school, they all thoroughly enjoyed the day and when coming back to school asked when they could go back again.

"This was a fantastic opportunity for our school to be part of, young carers coming together to celebrate the amazing work they do on a daily basis caring for parents, siblings or other family members who may have a physical or mental illness.

"The students worked well with students from other schools, making friends and learning about the support offered to young carers in the different schools," said Ms Blackmore.

"It was a brilliant day."
