Students across the College were given insights into the world of work with a number of challenges and workshops.

 On 28 April 2017 Year 7 took part in the Green Living Enterprise Challenge, set by South West Highways, their task was to design a sustainable living housing project designed by Go Construct sponsored by South West Highways and Kier Group.

"The challenge was introduced to them in an assembly a month before the curriculum collapse so that the students could work in their teams, set themselves job roles including Sustainability Manager, Project Manager and Architect and begin their designs," said Mrs Brooking the College's careers and employability advisor.

"On the morning of the curriculum collapse, each tutor group had an employer representative from the construction industry in to decide which team would present their ideas to a panel. 

"There was a bronze, silver and gold award presented in an assembly and the teams won vouchers and a site visit to see a local development."

The Year 9 Careers and Enterprise morning was led by Next Steps SW - a collaboration of 13 HEIs across Devon, Somerset and Cornwall. 

"The morning started with a presentation on Career Pilot - an online careers advice portal for students and how they can use this to help make decisions," said Mrs Brooking. 

"The students then attended two careers and enterprise sessions which included Power for Everyone, Everywhere - which showed how electricity is generated and the engineering behind this and Who Made This - a lesson designed to increase awareness behind a product or service and the job roles involved."

And half of Year 10 took part in the RAF Employability day which included a variety of STEM activities.

The other half did a World Skills lesson and attend a session on CV writing by Marjons.  World Skills is a national initiative aims to increase awareness of the labour market, skills which employers need and where there are skill shortages.  

The Sixth Form had a mini careers fair  attended by the Army, NHS, Prince's Trust and Skills Group

A Job Centre Plus team was also on hand for those students who were looking at apprenticeships and there was a student finance session for those going to university.
