Awards Evening 2025 - An Evening of Celebration!

Pride, excitement, and a sense of achievement filled the air as Stoke Damerel Community College hosted its much-anticipated annual Awards Ceremony.
The evening served as a joyful tribute to the dedication, growth, and accomplishments of our exceptional students.
Centred around the inspiring theme “Own your story,” the event came to life through powerful student reflections, a stirring musical performance, and a thought-provoking poem that united the audience in celebration.
The evening featured a series of heartfelt speeches delivered by our students.
Year 9 student speaker Jess, shared her personal journey at Stoke Damerel, highlighting the importance of self-expression and embracing individuality: “When first coming into secondary school I think the majority of people just want to fit in, but our school encourages us to express ourselves in many different ways. I have been in many different friendship groups and the one main thing I have learnt is no matter who you hang around with or who you try to be, the best thing to do is always be you. It's good to stand out and share your stories. You are your own person and should embrace it. Building strong friendships with amazing people who are different to me has helped me realise that being different is great. So my main message is to stand out, be you and not let anyone get in the way of who you are.“
Bethany in Year 8, reflected on the wide range of sporting opportunities at Stoke Damerel: “Since joining Stoke, I’ve taken part in so many amazing sports opportunities, like the PGL netball tournament and playing Rounders with a fantastic team. The support from my teachers has really helped me grow.”
“These experiences have given me the confidence and skills to trial for regional teams, compete in tournaments, and even be selected for West Devon as part of the England Pathway. With hard work and resilience you can achieve anything, so if you have a sport you enjoy, why don’t you give it a go!”
Judith, in Year 8, also added: “Being in a netball team gave me the drive to be the best I could be in sport—learning new skills from my teammates and learning to support each other, no matter the outcome of the game.”
“At the PGL Tournament, we went with the Year 8 netball team and played 8 games over the weekend, including the semi-final and final. We won all our games, making us the first Stoke team ever to win a PGL tournament! Our teamwork was incredible!”
Issac, our talented musician who performed his own song, eflected on how the performing arts shaped his school journey:
“Since Year 10, we’ve had our school productions every year. To some, they might just seem like a way for theatre kids to let off steam - but for me, and many others, they’ve meant so much more.”
“Before secondary school, I was anxious and quiet. But through hard work, perseverance, and the support of amazing teachers, I found the confidence to sing in front of hundreds and take on opportunities I never imagined.“
“I used to feel like I didn’t belong in anyone’s story—not quite fitting in with the theatre or music groups. But now, at 18, I’ve realised you can be part of a group without being exactly like them. If you have something to share, share it—whether or not you fit the mould.”
A special highlight of the evening was a beautifully written and performed poem by our talented Poet Laureate, Paula. Crafted especially for the occasion, her powerful words resonated deeply with the audience and captured the heart of the ceremony’s message.
Behind the scenes, none of this would have been possible without the dedication and tireless effort of our staff, who continue to guide, support, and uplift our students at every step. Their commitment ensures each student feels seen, supported, and celebrated.
Awards Evening 2025 will be remembered as more than just a ceremony—it was a heartfelt reminder of what’s possible when young people are encouraged to believe in themselves, embrace their stories, and chase their dreams with confidence.
Paula’s poem:
Own our Own Story
Through tests and trials, we rise and grow.
Each challenge faced, it really shows.
We learn and strive to reach new goals-
achieved with memories cherished.
Conquering doubts we once had feared,
Defines each year of growth.
Wow! How time flies by.
Striving through lessons, assessments
and celebrations. A chapter ends here.
With every failure you find what's true.
Attempt to push yourself further,
There's so much you can do.
Take charge of your life,
Make decisions for yourself-
It's your story and no one else’s.
Be an individual,
Dream big but stay focused,
Let learning be your driving force.
For even when the path is long,
It’s dreams that help us learn and flourish
So reflect on each week, stand tall, advance.
Each term and year brings another chance.
Well done to all our award winners!
