Staff Netball Tournament Brings Energy and Community to Break Times

Our Staff Netball Tournament proved to be a highlight of the term, turning ordinary break times into lively, action-packed events and bringing students and staff together in true House spirit.

The competition began with Sutton versus Saltram in a tightly contested opener. Both teams showed great determination, but Sutton managed to edge ahead and secure a 2–1 win. The pace picked up quickly in the next match as Mayflower took on Smeaton. Although Mayflower created several good opportunities, they struggled to convert them, allowing Smeaton to take control and finish with a strong 8–3 victory.

The final saw Sutton face Smeaton in a match that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. The first half was evenly matched, with impressive play from both sides. After half-time, Smeaton’s teamwork shone through as they gradually pulled ahead. Sutton fought hard, but Smeaton proved the stronger side, winning the match 7–4 and taking the overall title.

Around 300 students gathered for each game, filling the sports hall with enthusiastic—and sometimes deafening—support. The atmosphere was a fantastic reminder of the strength of our House system and its ability to bring the whole school together.

Reflecting on the day, Mr Hatherley, Sutton’s House Leader, shared, “It was an amazing experience—even if I was booed by the opposition’s students! But that’s what it’s all about.” Students were equally enthusiastic, remarking, “We loved watching the teachers making fools of themselves,” and, “They need to learn how to play netball properly though!”

Smeaton may have lifted the trophy, but the real triumph was the sense of fun, unity, and community spirit felt across the school.
