Life in the Fast Lane: Students Master Level 3 Bikeability

Our students recently took to two wheels to complete the Level 3 Bikeability course, the government’s national cycle training programme. Delivered by the expert team at the Plymouth School Sports Partnership, this advanced training was specially offered to our regular cyclists to provide them with the competence and confidence to navigate complex roads and traffic safely.

Before hitting the road, the trainers performed a full "MOT" on every student's bike and taught the group how to conduct their own vital safety checks. Students learned the "ABCD" of maintenance, checking for Air in tires, testing Brakes, inspecting the Chain, Cogs, and Cranks, and ensuring the Drop (or direction) of the handlebars was perfectly straight.

Throughout the sessions, students moved beyond basic cycling to master vital life skills. This included learning the correct way to wear a helmet and identifying when a helmet needs to be replaced for safety. Pupils practised braking confidently and correctly, using clear hand signals to communicate with other road users, and mastering the art of observation - learning exactly where to look and what hazards to look for.

One of our year 8 students, Summer, shared how the experience helped her:

"I feel so much more confident now when I'm cycling to school. Learning how to handle busy junctions was a bit scary at first, but it's given me the independence to get around on my own safely!"

Beyond the practicalities of road safety, the programme had a fantastic impact on student wellbeing. By embracing cycling as a healthy way to travel, our pupils have gained a sense of independence that translates directly into the classroom. We know that active travel leads to improved mental health and better focus, and it was wonderful to see our students building the resilience to stay outside all day, regardless of the weather.

From mastering difficult junctions to arriving at school with increased energy, our riders proved that Bikeability is about much more than just a training course—it is about developing healthy habits and confidence for life.
