Future Experts: Students Step Into the Shoes of Criminologists, Sociologists, and Lawyers

Our students recently enjoyed an exciting, hands-on taster day exploring the worlds of Criminology, Sociology, and Law. The immersive event gave them a fantastic insight into university life, higher education expectations, and potential future careers.

The day kicked off with insights from university academic staff before students were thrown straight into action. In a sociology and law workshop, they stepped into the shoes of professional social workers, analysing a complex family case study from multiple contrasting perspectives.

The excitement escalated when students visited the campus crime suite for an interactive, hands-on investigation. Tasked with solving a crime using clues left at the scene, they learnt about the critical importance of preserving a crime scene to protect vital evidence. They also practised forensic techniques, including how to lift and analyse real fingerprints, while discovering how to piece evidence together to build a legal case.

Nicole thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on forensic experience, adding:

"Getting to work inside a real crime suite and try out fingerprinting techniques was amazing. It really brought everything we’ve been learning to life."

Beyond the academic challenges, the day was a perfect opportunity for students to experience a university campus firsthand. They left with a much clearer understanding of what to expect from degree-level study and the dedication required to succeed in the legal and justice sectors.

Could we have some future detectives, barristers, or social workers in our midst? Based on their brilliant performance, the evidence says yes!
