Olivia Named SDCC’s New Poet Laureate!
Stoke Damerel Community College is proud to announce Year 10 student Olivia as our new College Poet Laureate, following a school-wide vote on National Poetry Day!
To celebrate National Poetry Day, students across all year groups were invited to submit original poetry centered around this year’s theme, "World of Wonder." English staff were blown away by the turnout and creativity on display. Three shortlisted poems were featured on The Street, where students had the chance to read the submissions and vote for the piece that resonated with them most. Olivia’s inspiring poem captured the hearts of her peers, earning her the top spot and the title of Poet Laureate for the upcoming academic year.
Miss Newmarch, English Teacher, praised the students' creative efforts:
"It was fantastic to see such a diverse range of poems from our students. The thought, effort, and dedication put into each piece shows how much our students enjoy expressing themselves. Most of the poems shared uplifting messages of positivity, hope, and pride. Thank you to everyone who took part—we were incredibly impressed, and a huge well done to Olivia!"
Mrs. Henderson, Head of English, added:
"We look forward to calling upon our very own Poet Laureate to mark events of significance in the life of the college."
Reflecting on her achievement, Olivia expressed her excitement for the year ahead:
"I was so shocked and happy when I found out I won! Writing is something I really enjoy, so having my poem chosen by other students means so much to me. I can’t wait to represent the college and write new pieces for special events this year!"
Congratulations to Olivia on this outstanding accomplishment, and thank you to every student who submitted a poem to make National Poetry Day such a success!
Olivia's poem:
Journey Through the Seven Natural Wonders
Beneath the waves, where sunlight gleams,
The Great Barrier Reef is full of dreams;
With coral gardens, bright and wide,
Colourful fish swim side by side.
From coral seas our journey flows,
To Rio’s harbour where blue water glows;
Green hills rise up above the bay
As Christ the Redeemer welcomes the day.
From Rio’s waves, the waters race
To Victoria Falls, a mighty place.
A roaring mist thunders all around,
Creating such a deafening sound.
Rushing waters journey through the land
To the Grand Canyon, vast and grand.
The Colorado River winds below,
Carved millions of years ago.
From canyon walls we look up high,
As Parícutin rises toward the sky,
Quietly sleeping through the night—
A volcano that once burned bright.
From Parícutin our journey climbs,
To Everest standing through all time.
Its icy peaks touch clouds so white,
Reflecting the morning’s golden light.
From Everest’s heights, we reach the sky,
Where green and violet ribbons fly.
The Northern Lights begin to glow,
Shining over the snow below.
