A Taste of Tradition: EAL Students Connect at ‘How Very British!’ Event

Welcoming new students and helping them feel at home is a core part of life at SDCC. Recently, our English as an Additional Language (EAL) department hosted a special ‘How Very British!’ event designed to help our new Year 7 EAL students settle smoothly into their secondary school journey.

The afternoon provided a warm, encouraging environment where our newest joiners could chat with older students, moving comfortably between English and their native languages. Our senior students were outstanding role models, sharing helpful insights into life at the College, passing on practical advice, and ensuring our Year 7s felt supported every step of the way.

Reflecting on the event, Aleena shared:

"It was such a wonderful opportunity to connect with the new students, speak in our home languages, and reassure them about starting at a new school. Sitting down together over scones was a great way to break the ice and build new friendships!"

Of course, no classic British gathering would be complete without afternoon tea! Students enjoyed traditional scones topped with jam and clotted cream—naturally sparking a friendly debate over the proper way to serve them. The verdict? Jam first, then cream!

The event was a fantastic success, filled with engaging conversation, laughter, and a strong sense of community. A big thank you to everyone who made the gathering so memorable—our new students are already looking forward to the next one!
