We are absolutely delighted that the Elmer elephant painted by College Art Technician Mr Jackson was sold at the Elmer auction for an amazing £8,900!

Mr Jackson’s Elmer, ‘Hipsta Saila’, was one of 40 Elmers painted by artists and sited around the city in Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth which ran from 8 July to 16 September. Then, on 9 October, they were all auctioned off to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice.

In all, the 40 Elmers raised £323,750!

‘Hipsta Saila’ was positioned at the Royal William Yard, at the bottom of the steps that lead up to Devil’s Point.  Mr Jackson said: “I’m absolutely blown away that it raised £8,900. In my wildest dreams, I didn’t think it would sell for that much.

“It was very exciting being in the auction room and to watch the bidding. An internet bidder won it and I’d love to know who it is.

“It was quite sad, though, watching it being wheeled away,” he added. “My six-year-old daughter contributed a little bit on the front, and we all grew quite attached to it.”

‘Hipsta Saila’ was sponsored by Associated British Ports and Mr Jackson said: “I wanted it to be funky, but also nautical, like an old sea dog.

“Overlooking the sea at the Royal William Yard was a perfect location for it. People could see it from the Royal William Yard, from the water, and from above at the top of the steps, so I think I struck lucky with that.”

Mr Jackson has been producing mixed media artwork for over 20 years. With a background in printing, surface pattern and graphic design, his work has evolved over time and is heavily influenced by living near the ocean.

“Elmer has been an amazing project to be involved in,” he said, “and I’m just buzzing that ‘Hipsta Saila’ attracted so much interest. And St Luke’s is such a brilliant local cause.”

St Luke’s say the money raised is the equivalent of providing over 350 families with hospice care at home. Chief Executive at the Charity, Steve Statham, said: “Two years ago we set out with an aim to ensure this project delivered a special legacy for St Luke’s beyond the trail and our Grand Charity Auction. Elmer’s Big Parade has delivered beyond what we could have ever dreamed of.”
