Students Engage in Thought-Provoking Q&A Session with MP Luke Pollard

On Friday, February 2nd, students spanning from Year 7 to Year 13 were treated to an enriching experience as they engaged in a vibrant Question and Answer session with their Member of Parliament, Luke Pollard MP for Plymouth, Sutton, and Devonport.
The event provided a platform for students to delve into pressing issues both at local and national levels, sparking insightful discussions on matters ranging from the economy to mental health funding and the environment.
The opportunity to quiz their MP on a diverse array of topics was met with enthusiasm as students raised pertinent questions, reflecting their keen interest in understanding the intricacies of governance and policymaking. From enquiries about the NHS and mental health funding to concerns about waiting times at Derriford Hospital, the session epitomised the students' engagement with issues directly affecting their lives and communities.
Of particular significance was the discourse surrounding the impending general election and its implications for newly eligible voters turning 18. Luke Pollard graciously illuminated the political landscape, shedding light on the significance of democracy and the role of informed citizenry in shaping the nation's future.
Brexit, a topic of enduring relevance, also commanded attention as students sought clarity on its origins and implications. Luke Pollard's comprehensive explanations provided valuable insights, enriching students' understanding of complex political issues.
The session almost turned into a bespoke edition of 'Question Time,' with Luke Pollard's thoughtful responses resonating deeply with the attending students.
Gracie, a Year 13 student, said, "The session was so insightful. Delving deeper into politics was enlightening, and it was reassuring to see Luke's genuine care for the people of Plymouth. It was a brilliant experience."
Similarly, Charlie from Year 9 reflected, "I thought the meeting was fantastic. Meeting Luke has given me a new look at the world for my future. He answered our questions in depth and took the time to explain how everything works."
Ben, also from Year 9, commented, "I never knew how the education funding system works in different areas of the country, but now I understand that the South West is funded totally differently to the rest of the UK and that is not fair!
Following on from his visit today, students from Yr 11 and 13 are now looking forward to joining Luke at his summer school at Plymouth University in the summer term!
As students emerge from the experience, they do so equipped with newfound knowledge, inspired by the possibilities of effecting positive change in their communities and beyond.
