Students Dive Behind the Scenes of Aladdin at Theatre Royal Plymouth

This week, the halls of Theatre Royal Plymouth resonated with the eager footsteps of over 40 students, embarking on an immersive all-day adventure into the heart of Disney's Aladdin.

Led by the educational team behind the production, students were treated to an enlightening exploration of the myriad roles and responsibilities that culminate in the magic of a grand musical.

The day commenced with a riveting one-hour interactive session led by the production's Company Managers. Through captivating dialogue, students gained invaluable insights into the intricate knowledge and diverse skill sets required for both onstage and backstage roles in an international touring production.

The statistics alone painted a vivid picture of the production's scale: 720 props, 1,200 Swarovski crystals adorning the costumes, 13 unique swords, 400 lighting cues, and a fleet of 16 HGV lorries to transport the colossal array of equipment. As students absorbed these staggering figures, the magnitude of Aladdin's production came into sharp focus.

Following the enlightening talk, students were divided into groups for an exclusive backstage tour of The Lyric Stage. Here, amidst the buzzing activity, they witnessed the backstage crew in full swing, orchestrating the magic behind the scenes. From lighting and sound technicians to costume designers and makeup artists, each role played a pivotal part in bringing the enchanting world of Aladdin to life.

The culmination of the day's activities arrived with a spectacular performance of Aladdin. As the curtains rose, students were transported into a world of wonder and delight, witnessing the culmination of months of dedication and artistry.

But the journey didn't end with the final bow. A post-show Q&A session with the backstage crew provided a rare opportunity for students to delve deeper into the intricacies of their roles and the collaborative efforts that seamlessly melded onstage and off. Insights flowed freely as students gained a newfound appreciation for the meticulous craftsmanship and coordination that underpins every aspect of a theatrical masterpiece.

A huge thank you to the Theatre Royal for this invaluable experience.
