Year 7 Students Cook Up a Sustainable Feast with Fish Heroes Scheme

Our Year 7 students were given another exciting opportunity to enhance their cooking skills, thanks to a generous contribution from the Fish Heroes scheme. This time, they worked with 12 tins of sustainable pink Alaskan salmon, turning them into delicious spicy Thai fish cakes accompanied by a sweet chilli dipping sauce.
The session offered more than just a chance to try new flavours—it was an educational journey as well. Students learnt about Alaska's innovative approach to sustainable fishing, where fishery managers set "escapement goals" based on scientific data to ensure enough fish safely return to their spawning grounds each year. This practice is rooted in the principle that fish should be "utilised, developed, and maintained on the sustainable yield principle," which helps ensure that wild pink salmon thrive in Alaskan waters for generations to come.
The hands-on cooking activity was a hit with the students, many of whom had never tried this type of dish before. Tolu student shared, “This was so quick and easy to make. I would love to try making it at home.”
We look forward to continuing to provide experiences that ignite creativity, encourage learning, and promote sustainability. A big thank you to the Fish Heroes scheme for making this valuable learning opportunity possible.
