Celebrating LGBTQIA+ History Month with a Film Screening

In celebration of LGBTQIA+ History Month, 25 students from across campus gathered for a special screening of the film ‘Love, Simon’. The event provided a unique opportunity for students to unite, share their voices, and reflect on the significance of LGBTQIA+ representation in the media.

A Year 10 student expressed, "It is so important to celebrate LGBTQIA+ and have our voices heard." The film was chosen for its poignant portrayal of Simon Spier, a closeted gay teenager who is caught between managing his personal life, a blackmailer threatening to reveal his secret, and his growing feelings for an anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online.

Another Year 10 student added, "I think it's healthier to come out on your own terms rather than letting others dictate when you should," highlighting the film’s powerful message about self-acceptance and personal growth.

The screening was met with such enthusiasm that a Year 11 student remarked, "Can we do this every Friday, please?" After the film, students were encouraged to write their own reviews, providing them with a chance to engage more deeply with the movie’s themes.

Mrs. Chalmers, who helped organise the event, remarked, "What a wonderful way to spend a Friday afternoon, and it was fantastic to see students from both schools coming together to share their voices. It’s such a special way to celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month."

The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and community. The students left feeling inspired and eager for future opportunities to continue celebrating diversity and inclusion.
