Former students Return to Inspire Future Engineers

Stoke Damerel students gained valuable insight into engineering careers this week as two former pupils, Sam and Tobe, returned to share their experiences working as fabricators at Babcock International Group.

The event, part of our annual Careers Evening, gave students the chance to learn about pathways after school. Sam explained,

“I chose to work for Babcock because of the company’s reputation in engineering, particularly in defence and marine projects like frigates and submarines. It’s exciting to work on large-scale projects that really make a difference. I owe a lot to my time at Stoke Damerel — the teachers and support I had really set me on this path.”

Tobe added,

“I love that we can earn while we learn. The structured training programme helps you gain qualifications and hands-on experience, and there’s always support and room to progress in your career.”

They emphasised the importance of precision, teamwork, and problem-solving. They also offered advice to current students:

  • “Take practical subjects like Design & Technology, Engineering, or Construction.”

  • “Seek work experience to see what the industry is really like.”

  • “Have confidence, a positive attitude, and be willing to learn.”

  • “Explore apprenticeships early — university isn’t the only route to success.”

A big thank you to Sam and Tobe for returning to inspire the next generation and representing both Stoke Damerel and Babcock International Group so positively.
