Mrs Burns Represents SDCC at the UK Parliament Ambassador Programme

We are thrilled to share that Mrs. Burns recently had the incredible opportunity to travel to London and participate in the prestigious 20th UK Parliament Teachers Ambassador programme.

This fantastic three-day immersive scheme gives educators a unique, behind-the-scenes look at British democracy in action, allowing them to bring first-hand knowledge directly back to our classrooms.

During the intensive three-day trip, Mrs. Burns received a look at the inner workings of British democracy. Her packed itinerary began in the galleries, where she watched the House of Commons live in action, before she headed to the Supreme Court of Justice to explore the foundations of the UK's legal framework.

The experience also offered unique opportunities to engage directly with key political figures. Mrs. Burns met with Lords and Baronesses to discuss how the House of Lords scrutinises new legislation, and even participated in an exclusive Q&A session with the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle. Together, they discussed a range of vital topics, from the daily welfare of MPs to the secrets behind keeping the peace when debates get rowdy.

With democratic participation facing challenges globally, experiences like this are more vital than ever. Mrs. Burns is excited to use this experience to inspire our students to find their voices and stand up for things that matter to them and their communities.

"This was an amazing opportunity to follow the history of democracy and see the vital role our MPs play," says Mrs. Burns. "It is so important that the students we teach today hold onto the values of having their say. After all, we might just be shaping the future Members of Parliament - or even the next Prime Minister!"

We look forward to seeing these parliamentary insights come to life in our lessons. Welcome back, Mrs. Burns!
