Stoke Damerel Community College

Celebratory meal for Wizard of Oz team

All the students involved in the staging of The Wizard of Oz were treated to pizza and cookies as a “thank you” and “well done” for the show’s amazing success.

Some of our teachers acted as waiters and waitresses as the students enjoyed a celebratory meal together in the senior dining room, following the three-night run of the musical, which went down a storm with the audiences.

Work on the play started in the New Year and students came in at weekends and holidays for rehearsals and to work on the set. Mrs Clift said: “They all worked very hard and showed such dedication, so we thought it would be nice to get everyone together to celebrate with pizzas and cookies. They deserve it.”

Mr Bullard told the students that they were an “amazing team” and said: “This is an experience which we hope you will cherish for the rest of your life.”

Mr Follett also thanked the students on behalf of the College, telling them: “You came a long, long, way from the start to the performances - and what a fantastic performance! The audiences absolutely loved it.

“We are all so proud of you, and you should be proud of yourselves.

“You have all made memories and friends along the way,” he added. “And I can tell you that these memories last forever. I was a lion in a school play when I was 14 - a long time ago! - and I still have those memories today.”

The great news is that there are future opportunities ahead, as the College plans to stage an all-school play every year.  Mr Follett told the students: “We cannot wait to see what future performances you can put on!”
