Every year, some of Devon and Cornwall's sixth form students are involved in road collisions. Over the past five years young drivers (aged 17-24) in the two counties have been involved in more than 4,800 collisions - that is 25% of all collisions despite young drivers only representing around 7% of licence holders.  

This is why the College was so determined to ensure our sixth form students had the chance to “attend” a virtual road safety presentation by Learn2Live - even though our Year 12 and 13 students are in self-isolation.

Mrs Sinclair said: “The Learn2Live presentation is a potential life-saver - and it had the same if not a bigger impact on the students due to them listening individually. The engagement from our students was superb and their feedback was excellent.”

Learn2Live has been academically evaluated by Plymouth University and Exeter University and shown to have a positive effect on students' attitude to risk and road safety. The presentation, developed in line with the latest academic research and road safety education guidance, is based on a short film. It also includes responders from the emergency services talking about real-life collisions they have attended, and the devastation felt by those involved and by loved ones.

Mrs Sinclair said: “The students were moved by the virtual presentation and were able to seek support if required from parents and carers as well as the Sixth Form team remotely.”

The event was arranged to coincide with Road Safety Week, on 16-22 November. This year, the campaign has put a big focus on children and young people.
