Year 12 students attend University of Plymouth's Winter Conference

In an enriching experience, Year 12 students from SDCC were honoured with an invitation to the University of Plymouth's Winter Conference.

The event offered a comprehensive introduction to university life, a captivating campus tour, and a thought-provoking lecture by Professor James Daybell. The day not only expanded the students' understanding of higher education but also delved into peculiar historical facets associated with the Christmas period.

The Winter Conference began with an insightful introduction to university life, providing students with a glimpse into the academic and social aspects. This served as a valuable opportunity for the SDCC Year 12 students to envision their potential futures within a university setting.

The students were treated to a guided tour of the Plymouth University campus, offering them a firsthand look at the state-of-the-art facilities and vibrant learning environment.

The highlight of the day was a captivating lecture delivered by Professor James Daybell in the newly re-constructed Babbage Building. The lecture explored the fascinating historical quirks intertwined with the Christmas period. Students were entertained with insights into the origins of Christmas cards and learnt about Oliver Cromwell's attempt to ban Christmas, providing a historical context that went beyond the typical festive narratives.

Throughout the conference, the SDCC Year 12 students exhibited impeccable behaviour, reflecting their genuine interest and appreciation for the opportunities presented. Beyond the academic insights, the day served as a platform for students to gather valuable information about the potential trajectories of their futures.

As the students absorbed the information and envisioned their futures, the event underscored the importance of such experiences in shaping their aspirations and preparing them for the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.
