Silver Duke of Edinburgh Students Excel in Practice Expedition

This week marked a memorable journey for Silver Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) students as they embarked on their practice expedition, focusing extensively on refining their map reading skills and embracing the great outdoors.

Blessed with favourable weather conditions, the students embarked on an adventure, encountering diverse terrains that tested their resilience and navigational skills. From challenging uphill climbs to navigating through bogs, streams, and even prickly bushes, the students embraced every twist and turn with enthusiasm and determination.

While the journey presented its share of challenges, including a slight detour in the woods, it also provided invaluable learning opportunities. Guided by their instructors, students engaged in comprehensive discussions on various navigational techniques, utilising maps to navigate through different terrains. Armed with newfound knowledge, students collaborated in pairs, taking turns to lead the group and apply their skills in real-world scenarios.

Throughout the expedition, students delved into the intricacies of map reading, mastering the use of six-digit map codes, employing sticks to pinpoint detailed locations, and employing techniques such as hand railing, check features, catch features, and contouring. These skills not only enhanced their confidence but also equipped them with essential tools for their main expedition.

As the day unfolded, the expedition transitioned into a culinary delight, as students gathered in small groups to set up trangias and prepare delicious meals. From jambalaya and chilli tortilla boat wraps to mac and cheese, dumplings and pasta bakes - they even managed to warm up flat breads as a side dish! The students really excelled with their culinary creativity.

Beyond the physical challenges and navigational triumphs, the practice expedition served as a testament to the power of positivity and teamwork. Amidst the trials and triumphs, students forged bonds, supported one another, and embraced the spirit of adventure with unwavering enthusiasm.
