Stoke Damerel Community College

British Science Week

This year's focus for British Science Week is on the fascinating concept of time. Students dived into various activities and experiments aimed at unraveling the mysteries of time, from building pendulums to participating in the Big Plastic Count.

One of the highlights of the week is the investigation into time through the construction of pendulums. Students were tasked with building their own pendulums with the goal of accurately measuring one minute. This hands-on activity not only engages students but also allows them to grasp the fundamental principles of time measurement practically.

Year 7 and 8 students have also had the opportunity to participate in the Big Plastic Count, contributing to the ongoing efforts to understand and combat plastic pollution. By collecting and documenting plastic waste, students not only learnt about environmental issues but also took meaningful action towards addressing them.

Adding a touch of excitement to the week were the "T-Rex-Tastic" assemblies focused on time. These assemblies blended entertainment with education, providing students with a fun yet informative way to learn about various aspects of time. And the question on everyone's mind: Who could the mystery guest in the T-Rex costume be?

Science Week serves as a reminder of the importance of scientific enquiry and exploration in our lives. It encourages students to question, investigate, and discover the world around them, fostering a lifelong curiosity for science and learning.

Who knows what exciting discoveries and insights await them as they journey through the captivating realm of science?
