Stoke Damerel Community College

DofE and CCF Celebration Evening

Last night marked a significant milestone as Stoke Damerel Community College and Scott Medical College came together to host their inaugural cross-campus Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) and Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Celebration Evening.

The event served as a platform to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students over the past year.

Amidst an atmosphere of pride and camaraderie, students were recognised for their outstanding accomplishments, receiving accolades ranging from full awards to section awards in categories such as physical fitness, skill development, expeditions, volunteering, residential, and overall achievement. Additionally, a selection of special awards was bestowed upon students who demonstrated exceptional dedication and excellence.

Reflecting on their experiences, students shared their insights and reflections:

Bronze awardee Sophie said, “It is clear to see that the Duke of Edinburgh Award program is not just about completing a set of activities, but about developing lifelong skills and qualities that will benefit participants in all areas of their lives.

It’s an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone whilst facing challenges that develop resilience, determination, and leadership skills. The program also encourages participants to give back to their communities through volunteering, which fosters a sense of responsibility and empathy towards others.”

Silver full award recipient River, beamed “Through my DofE experience of both bronze and silver, I have not only learnt valuable skills such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance but also discovered more about myself - my strengths, weaknesses, and remembering to put plasters on before the expedition, so I don’t get blisters!”

Faith, one of the few Gold awardees said, “The main difference between Gold DofE and the other levels is the residential section. This personally turned out to be my favourite section to complete. Unlike my peers who chose to do a variety of other residentials, from sailing to DIY, I chose to do mine at a respite centre for people with disabilities in London.”

CCF student Georgia said, “Being a cadet has given me so many great life experiences. I have met a whole range of different people and experienced amazing things. One of the difficulties I had when I started cadets was talking to new people and big groups of people. However, I found once I started a conversation with them, I found out that we have a lot in common. Cadets helped me to become more confident and have helped me to become who I am today.”

A resounding sentiment echoed by CCF students, who similarly embraced the opportunity to challenge themselves and develop invaluable skills.

As the evening drew to a close, heartfelt gratitude was extended to the dedicated staff members whose unwavering support and guidance paved the way for student success. A resounding applause resonated through the room as the collective achievements of our DofE students were celebrated, acknowledging their determination, perseverance, and unwavering commitment.

To our DofE and CCF students, you are the embodiment of the Duke of Edinburgh's ethos. Your resilience and dedication serve as an inspiration to us all, and we are immensely proud of your accomplishments. Here's to continued success and future endeavours, as you continue to exemplify the spirit of excellence and adventure.
