A Day of Fieldwork Adventures for Year 11 geography Students

Our Year 11 geography students set off on an exciting day of fieldwork, blending outdoor exploration with valuable learning experiences in preparation for their upcoming GCSE exam in June.

The morning was spent in Tavistock, investigating the question ‘Is Tavistock a sustainable town?’. Armed with enthusiasm and curiosity, the students worked exceptionally hard gathering data throughout the town, and what better way to recharge after a productive morning than with a delicious pasty for lunch!

Following their urban exploration, the students travelled over to Cadover Bridge, a complete change of scenery to the villiage environment. Here, they tackled a new enquiry: "Do river characteristics change downstream?" Even though not all sections of the river were accessible due to high water levels, thankfully, our very own river safety expert, Mr O’Brien was on hand in full drysuit and safety gear to navigate the waters to gather the required data. In moments where the river's flow permitted, some students even ventured into the water themselves, measuring depths and collecting sediment samples.

The day concluded with a sense of accomplishment and newfound knowledge, as the students embraced the opportunity to learn beyond the confines of the classroom. This experience not only provided valuable insights but also served as a motivational boost as they prepare for their exams in the coming months.
