Exploring Plymouth Station with GWR

A group of students embarked on an exciting journey to Plymouth Railway Station, courtesy of Great Western Railway.

This trip, an extension of our collaboration with GWR's 'Women into The Railways' initiative, aimed to provide students with hands-on experience and insights into the diverse career opportunities within the railway industry.

The day began with an introduction to station safety, led by knowledgeable staff members who shared their career journeys within the railways. From behind-the-scenes personnel to those interacting directly with passengers, each highlighted the varied entry routes and ongoing support for career development within the organisation.

A guided tour of the station offered a glimpse into the roles and responsibilities of individuals working in different departments. What was particularly inspiring was meeting an ex-student who, inspired by previous workshops, is now on track to complete her apprenticeship this year, hoping to secure a full-time position as a Gateline Assistant. This student was one of the first to be involved with the GWR Women into the Railways workshops held in school. This is what inspired her to apply for an apprenticeship with the Railways.

The group then went on a visit to the platform to observe the train dispatchers and train managers following the safety procedures. These are activities that go unnoticed but ensure the safety of passengers.

Following this, they then visited the signalling office. From here, staff control the trains entering and leaving the station, managing what platforms the trains arrive and depart from. Having listened to the staff explaining their role and answering questions, students were able to operate the signalling controlling the incoming and outgoing trains. One lucky student even got to send a train across the iconic Albert Bridge that spans the Tamar River!

In the afternoon, the students had access to the train simulator. Each student was introduced to the mechanics of train driving and spent time operating the simulator as all trainee train drivers do. The instructor was able to change the weather conditions and at one point simulated a train fire.

The students' feedback emphasised how eye-opening and inspiring the visit was, offering valuable insights into both the station's inner workings and the number of career pathways available within the railways. One student said “I hadn't thought about the railways, but I am now considering them as an employer.”

We would like to thank the staff at GWR for a fantastic and inspirational day and the complimentary Easter Eggs.
